Suki was a welcome addition to the Gaang. It's the pastede-on addition of Mai at the end, to the core group, that left the most sour taste in my mouth.
hmmm I wonder why Mai was added to the core group since she didn't do anything at the finale and released by his uncle. It's so weird except if she Involved much along the gang ( although I loathe that Idea) but if she join the gaang I wish it's because her own will not because Zuko that will given her more character. Because of Maiko I loathe Bryke more.
Yeah, I even want to go as far as to say, I could have liked Mai. I could have...if they'd just given her more of a story than "lolol, I had to be quiet" and made her have some kind of epiphany about the Fire Nation's place in the world. I suppose that was too much to ask.
Heheheh thanks ^^ ah your icon is from kawaiinot too XD luvey. Hmmm well, Maiko is forced only to make Kataang happen. I will love Mai if she can move on and have her own conscience to what is right or wrong and realize herself that life is never boring if she know how heheheh but I guess you're right that's too much to ask since Bryke only cared bout that damnable Kataang ( ATLA story will be a real grand epic if they doesn't involve unnecessary romance in it) and for me better if they make it toward friendship with open ending and yeah bryke wasted many good character in ATLA.
Or not even so much an epiphany as an "I'm sick of being everyone else's do-girl, so fuck this noise."
Her turnaround in TBR was admirable, but it still felt cheapened compared to Zuko's in DOBS in that she was still doing it for someone else (Zuko), whereas Zuko told his dad to fuck off for no one but himself.
Had Mai said "I did it because you're a bitch and I'm sick of your bullshit" I might have actually cheered instead of just raising an eyebrow.
I felt the "you're a bitch too, u h0r" was kinda implied in her insurrection, but still I would've liked to hear it spelt out a little more plainly than [monotone bored voice] "I'm saving the guy who dumped me."
I thought Suki was a wonderful addition, too. Much more natural than Haru, the Duke, and Teo, who didn't even get lines anyway. (what a waste!)
I never thought about it until now, but you're right that it's weird for Mai to be included in the gang picture at the end. Shouldn't she be off at the Royal Palace making doilies or something?
...okay, that was mean. I should have said that about the writing staff, not Mai. Mai rocks. The writing staff did NOT rock when they had her sit out the entire finale. It is awkward that she was absent for the whole thing and then suddenly is part of the group. But...what can you do? People bring dates to family dinners...
Hm...I know Zuko probably told everyone that Mai was the reason they were able to escape the BR prison, but it must have been weird for her to meet everyone else after fighting them for a seasons. ESPECIALLY, Suki, on account of being beaten and captured by them. We saw that reaction with Ty Lee, at least... Sokka's WTF and then the Kyoshi Warriors vouching for her. We didn't really see anyone react to Mai except Zuko.
LOLOLOL. I think that's the first time I've heard you say anything negative about Mai. XDDD Kudos!
Yeah, Mai was the reason they escaped in TBR, I'll give her that much. BUT...what if Zuko hadn't been on the gondola? Would Mai still have saved them? Not likely.
My biggest beef with Mai at the ending in that tea shop scene is, we didn't get a realization on her part that she'd been on the wrong side the entire time. Even in TBR, she did it for Zuko. She even called him a traitor to his face. I have a hard time believing that her acts in TBR were the result of her suddenly "being on board with the gaang ideology" and not simply because she wanted to suck Zuko's face more. LOL.
Yeah. Weird ending, weird ending, yeah. Fortunately it's (temporarily) revived my desire to write a post-series fic (when I finish all the other stuff on my damn plate).
You're right that she did it for Zuko, I completely agree there. And I would have been happier if we'd had some sign before of her dissatisfaction with Azula or Ozai's reign of terror or some evidence that she believed not just in Zuko, but actually shared his cause. That would have grounded her character more, and made me take their relationship more seriously. (I still don't take their relationship that seriously...I actually have greater respect for Mai's feelings than for Zuko's, since I'm not as convinced of his great love for her as I am of hers for him. Frankly I think Zuko has a deeper relationship with Aang than he does with Mai, and they're not sucking face...ending parenthetical now!)
Nevertheless, I'd be an ass-up hypocrite if I held it against her character for doing the right thing out of love instead of moral justice. ::snort:: First because that's the basis of pretty much every season 1 K/Z fic, and second because it's pretty much the life purpose of my favorite tv character of all time, Spike. He loved so much that he went and bought a conscience just so the person he was in love with could sleep at night knowing that her lover had a moral compass that wasn't just her.
LOLOLOL. I think that's the first time I've heard you say anything negative about Mai. XDDD Kudos!
Shhh! Don't tell anyone. I want to maintain my fandom moral high ground. ;)
Actually, though, I do generally like Mai. I'm a Mai/Ty Lee shipper (season 3 had them turn traitor as a unit, which makes me v. happy.) And I keep thinking up break-up songs for Zuko and Mai... which is problematic because they got back together on the show. Just when I had a really good song for their break-up, too!
I'm not sure I can think of how to write a fic with Mai breaking up with Zuko without looking like an ass--applauded by my fellow shippers for "fixing" the problem and derided by everyone else as breaking them up "for ship reasons" since I'm an obvious and known zutara writer.
I don't know how to write something that says "I'm not breaking them up so Katara and Zuko can suck face with a clear conscience, I'm breaking them up because their puppy love wouldn't last more than five months anyway, and I've practically built a fanmix in my head about this very topic. And, also, I think Mai belongs with her girlfriend."
I guess my opinion on this doesn't count for much since I'm already a Zutaran, but I don't have any problem with so-called 'fixing', as long as the resulting story is of high quality.
No doubt, you could conjure such a thing - provided you were inclined to, and if your past work is anything to go by. ;D
That post seems really unnecessary. Like this girl is just looking for things to complain about. I thought Suki was developed just fine for the role she was meant to play - which was a back-up character. She's part of the Gaang because she can keep up with them, plain and simple.
